Pondering Stretching with a Purpose

Thanks to Brenda for hosting Pondering with a Purpose. This weeks theme is:

"Stretch"

This week I watched a TED Talk about education (see below).  This got me thinking, what are the ingredients to good education?  While many talk about fundamentals and the need to have wrote abilities others express the need to foster creativity and work to student strengths.  In my mind, I find my job in high education is to stretch their minds.  It is one thing to learn a theoretical frame but if the student has no context on how the model affects life on this planet then, it becomes useless information.  Further, students have to stretch to see how understanding and applying certain theoretical frames can lead to increased skill development.  Even better, if the students can then stretch their minds a little more to see how the theoretical frame could be modified and improved upon that would lead them to think in an innovative mind-frame.  This is where students really need to be in the new economy and if we can get them there, we have done our job.
