Pondering With A Purpose

Practicality

Practically, is one of the most misused words I have ever heard.  The definition of the word is:

prac·ti·cal

  [prak-ti-kuhl]
adjective
1.
of or pertaining to practice  or action: practical mathematics.
2.
consisting of, involving, or resulting from practice  or action:a practical application of a rule.
3.
of, pertaining to, or concerned with ordinary activities, business, or work: practical affairs.
4.
adapted or designed for actual use; useful: practical instructions.
5.
engaged or experienced in actual practice  or work: practical politician.

This is why I cringe when I hear the following statements:

We are practically brother and sister...
We are practically neighbors...
I was practically that close to...

Oh, I overheard this one in the hall last week,

She was practically naked.

While I dislike people who feel the need to correct others grammar, I also not a big fan of people misusing words and have perfected the internal cringe -  It is just practical that I do so.

P.S. Dictionary.com example of "a practical politician."   I thought those two terms combined created one heck of an oxymoron.
