Today was a great day at the James island connector run. It was the best organized JIC I have seen in the six years I have been involved with the event.
Even more important, Robyn ran her first adult 5k and finished third for her age group.
I will put up some more on this later.

Saturday Special - High School Shopping
Our 13 year old is in grade eight and we have to apply to high schools for her in November. Today we are going to an open house for high schools. The question must be asked, what are the ingredients of a good high school? For me, I am looking for three main things:
1. The school has to be engaging in various types of education. I want to see classroom experiences combined with experiential learning. I want to see that education to them is just not what you scored on your latest standardized test;
2. I want to see a nurturing environment. In a perfect world, the school has excellent diversity where perspectives of all types are accepted and discussed. I want to see a school where respect is not just demanded of the students but also demanded of the faculty as well. Respect is a two-way street; and
3. Please just for a minute, forget the edu-babble and talk to me as a parent in a manner that I am treated as a partner in my child's education. Don't just lip service me - demonstrate to me that you understand that education does not stop at the classroom door. I know students in high school have to be more independent but that does not mean parents should be completely cut out of the loop.
While the final choice is my 13 year old's, it will be her school after all, that we can help guide her choice to give her opportunities for success in her future. I guess that should be the goal of any parent.

Saturday Special - Original vs. Remake - Which is better?
I thought today would be a fun day to do a fun competition. I picked out three songs and their remakes. Leave me a comment with your votes as to which one is better.
The first one is tough for me. I love Nine Inch Nails but the Johnny Cash version of Hurt was phenomenal.
This one is a interesting challenge. Montley Crue the personification of sex, drugs and rock & roll versus the wholesome Carrie Underwood. Who takes this one home; the bad boys or the good girl?
Finally, a three way generational battle. Bob Dylan vs. Guns and Roses vs. Avril Lavigne. All three produced very different versions of the song. Which generation produced the best?

The Saturday Special
This was a tough week for me. As a wise friend pointed out to me yesterday, 80% of my job is awesome and 20% is junk. He reminded me how lucky I am to have a job where 80% of what I do I absolutely love. His astute point was that I could let the 20% junk let me down a path of hurting the 80% but that would just make things worse. How true!
After talking to him yesterday, I went back to my office and tallied up the good things that happened this week versus the garbage things. When looking at the balance, I am silly to let the negative push me away from all the good that can happen.
Thanks to my wise friend for his sage advice.
Wayne.
